Practical advice

Why does a circuit breaker trip?

A breaker trips to protect the installation when it detects an unusual condition. Repeated tripping should be investigated, not bypassed.

Several causes are possible

An overload, faulty appliance, moisture or installation fault can produce a similar symptom. Only an appropriate diagnosis can identify the cause.

  • Tripping linked to one particular appliance
  • Tripping when several items operate together
  • A persistent fault when usual appliances are switched off

What to record

Note when the breaker trips, which area loses power and what appliances were running. Never force a protective device to remain on and do not open the panel.

When to move away

Unusual heat, a burning smell, crackling, smoke or black marks mean that the installation should not be touched and the situation should be treated as potentially dangerous.
